New York Systems

I'm David. I live in Astoria. During the day I work at a startup. Other times I visit bookstores.
This blog is my curio collection, sort of. I'll have a place of my own for essays... someday.

That’s kind of hard. most — most jokes are about Jewish people, rednecks, black folks. Most jokes target — I don’t know. I didn’t make up the jokes, I don’t know. They usually target, though, a group. Gays or straights, black, redneck, you know, I just don’t know — I just don’t know what to say. I can’t, myself, determine what offends another person.
Paula Deen, ladies and gentlemen.
…it would demonstrate that there are systems and forces that no single individual can overcome, no matter how many Tim Ferriss books he’s read.

"We’re not racists but we see the absence of black players at Zenit as an important tradition," Zenit fan club Landscrona said in a letter, called the "Selection 12 manifesto", posted on its website on Monday.

The fans said they want more home-grown or European players in the team. “We only want players from other brotherly Slav nations, such as Ukraine and Belarus as well as from the Baltic states and Scandinavia. We have the same mentality and historical and cultural background as these nations,” the letter said.

There’s another infamous shooting of a nine-year-old girl that is making headlines this week in Tucson. This time, we wonder if the rest of the media will bother to cover it.

The little girl’s name was Brisenia Flores. She lived near the border with her parents and sister outside the town of Arivaca, Arizona. On May 30 of 2009, a woman named Shawna Forde, who led an offshoot unit of Minutemen who ran armed border patrols for patriotic “fun”. Forde’s gang had decided to go “operational,” which meant they concocted a scheme to raid drug smugglers and take their money and drugs and use it to finance a border race war and “start a revolution against the government”. They targeted the Flores home, which had neither money nor drugs, based on dubious information. They convinced Flores to let them in by claiming to be law-enforcement officers seeking fugitives, then shot him point-blank in the head when he questioned them and wounded his wife, Gina Gonzalez. And then, while she pleaded for her life, they shot Brisenia in cold blood in the head. (Her sister, fortunately, was sleeping over at a friend’s.)

That poor baby. That poor family. That poor community.

I’m so sick of this shit. This is racism. Pure and simple. This is where racism always leads. This is what a culture of white supremacy looks like, people. White politicians on tv frothing at the mouth over “illegals threatening our way of life”. Is it any wonder that POC are rounded up and shot when the people who represent us continue to mark these minorities as “threats”?

This needs to fucking stop. We need to stop tolerating the people who help create this culture of xenophobia, white supremacy, and fear.

oh my god.

"Culturally, [Obama] will have to demonstrate that even though he comes from an unusual background, he is a fervent believer in the old-fashioned bourgeois virtues: order, self-discipline, punctuality and personal responsibility."

All right, then: This sentence is either frankly racist or frankly forgiving of racism. This sentence would never have been written about a white politician. This sentence makes accusations, implicit and explicit, against the President of the United States of America that have nothing to do with anything he’s done and everything to do with who many white Americans think he is. Has there been any indication that Barack Obama does not believe in the “old-fashioned bourgeois virtues?” Has the man been anything but bourgeois to a fault? Has he not believed in “order” so deeply he’s sacrificed his presidency to its maintenance? Has he not been so “self-disciplined” that he’s regularly accused of being robotic? Let’s leave aside the inflammatory rhetoric of “personal responsibility”: Has Barack Obama ever been accused of being late? And if not, where the hell does “punctuality” come from?

Of note: That armband uses the AA Korean character, Nida, as a stand-in for Koreans.

The founder mentions the American Tea Party groups as a model. (I’ve also seen mention of right-wing populist groups in Europe using their example.) It’s strange that such an American-seeming theme on the face of it can be exported in such a way. (Ahistory in action?)

An Arizona elementary school mural featuring the faces of kids who attend the school has been the subject of constant daytime drive-by racist screaming, from adults, as well as a radio talk-show campaign (by an actual city councilman, who has an AM talk-radio show) to remove the black student’s face from the mural, and now the school principal has ordered the faces of the Latino and Black students pictured on the school wall to be repainted as light-skinned children.

With the bonfire of controversy over its anti-illegal immigration law still burning strong, Arizona got more tinder going on another controversy Tuesday when Gov. Jan Brewer signed into law a ban on ethnic studies in the state’s schools.

The legislation was specifically targeted at high schools in the Tucson Unified School District with courses in Mexican American studies. Critics of those courses said they were used by activists in Tuscon to incite hatred, particularly of whites. A fact sheet for House Bill 2282 gives the purpose of the bill thusly:

"Prohibits public schools from including courses or classes, which promote the overthrow of the U.S. government or resentment towards a race or class of people, and specifies rules pertaining to pupil disciplinary proceedings are not to be based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin or ancestry."

The law has certain exceptions, such as for native Americans, for instance.
